Cruise Discounts, by Type of Cruise

Alaska, river, luxury, expedition or a quick Caribbean getaway — each is discounted differently. Here is how.

Find My Cruise Discount

Cruise Discounts Depend on the Kind of Cruise

A seven-night Alaska sailing, a Danube river cruise, a luxury voyage and a three-night Bahamas getaway are all “cruises,” but they are discounted in completely different ways. Cruising Discounts sorts cruise discounts by type of trip, so you know what kind of saving to expect and where it usually hides.

Mainstream ocean lines fill very large ships and compete hard on fare, onboard credit and extras. Luxury and expedition lines rarely slash fares in public; they add value instead. River lines sell small ships with a fixed number of cabins and reward people who commit early. Alaska has its own rhythm because of its short season and the choice between Seattle and Vancouver. Once you know the pattern for your trip, you can tell a real deal from a dressed-up one.

What Each Type of Cruise Usually Discounts

Type of cruiseMost common kind of discountWhat to watch
Big-ship ocean (Caribbean, Mexico, Bahamas)Lower fares, onboard credit, reduced deposits, extra guests in the cabin at reduced ratesTaxes, fees and gratuities on top; drink and Wi-Fi packages sold separately
AlaskaEarly-booking fares, value at the start and end of the season, cruisetour packagesCabins with balconies and cruisetour dates sell early; flights can outweigh fare savings
RiverEarly-booking savings, air offers, reduced single supplements on selected datesShips are small, so popular dates sell out; compare what is already included
Luxury oceanAdded value: air, upgrades, shipboard credit, sometimes reduced fares on selected voyagesFares are inclusive, so compare per-day value, not headline price
ExpeditionEarly-booking offers and occasional air or pre-trip packagesLimited cabins and short seasons; flights to the embarkation port matter

Cruise Discounts: Quick Answers

Why do cruise discounts look so different from line to line?

Because each kind of cruise has a different cost to fill. Big-ship lines with thousands of cabins cut fares and add onboard credit; luxury lines with inclusive fares tend to add value such as air or upgrades; river lines often discount early bookings and air. Knowing the pattern tells you where to look.

Are the biggest cruise discounts always the best deal?

No. A large percentage off an inflated “brochure” fare can cost more than a modest offer on a fairly priced sailing. Compare the final price for your cabin, taxes and fees included.

Can I combine cruise discounts?

Sometimes. Eligibility rates, past-guest offers and sale promotions may or may not stack, depending on the line and the fare type. Cruise Discounters covers eligibility discounts in detail.

Do you list current prices?

No. Fares change daily, so we explain how discounts work and our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise quote live prices on your dates.
